Birnbeck Island – The Sea Garden
The Birbeck Island competition was a call for ideas and proposals to re-vitalise an abandoned Victorian pier, an island in Weston-Super-Mare, Somerset. Our concept was to create a Sea Garden, which would be a landscape existing between land and sea to capture the very high tides of the Bristol Channel. A series of pools would provide a variety of leisure and educational activities, from freshwater and seawater swimming pools, to tidal rock pools for the exploration of sealife and ecology. This new artificial landscape, inspired by observations of rock formations, would be constructed from the broken up remains of the existing concrete platforms on the island.
